About CLPS
The Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative allows rapid acquisition of lunar delivery services from commercial vendors to send NASA science and technology payloads, enabling industry growth and supporting long-term lunar exploration. The CLPS model offers a unique opportunity to test and refine technologies and integrate systems that will provide insight for future crewed missions to Moon as part of NASA’s Artemis campaign.

As NASA prepares to send humans back to the Moon, we are sending science and technology instruments ahead of time to lay the foundation for a long-term human presence. Through NASA’s CLPS initiative, we are enabling American companies to send our science experiments and technologies to the lunar surface for us. This unique commercial delivery service is poised to change the way we work and perform science at the Moon, greatly expanding our capabilities for exploration.

CLPS Providers
NASA currently has a pool of 13 eligible American companies on contract under CLPS.
To date, NASA has awarded 11 lunar deliveries to five CLPS vendors to carry more than 50 payloads to the Moon. CLPS contracts are indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contracts with a combined maximum contract value of $2.6 billion through November 2028. Individual CLPS contract awards cover end-to-end commercial payload delivery services, including payload integration, mission operations, launch from Earth, and landing on the surface of the Moon.

Landing on the Moon is hard.
With any new endeavor there is a new level of risk. With CLPS, NASA has accepted the risk that going through this innovative approach with commercial companies, that there could be some failures. Even with a few risks, CLPS remains an affordable and beneficial approach to lunar exploration. And with every failure comes lessons learned that will improve future missions to come.
